#1
Trying to boot win2usb on surface book 2 using 256gb externall ssd drive over usb.. adata one. Boots fine first time but on installing updates the machine won't boot again gets stuck with the spinning dots and no further or gets stuck in automatic repair but doesnt do anything. Wipe drive start again and same thing happens.

Also couldn't do fat32 from cmd in windows so had to use a 3rd party tool could that be it? Almost there but not quite.

This is normal, Windows may not start correctly after installing Windows updates. In such case, we recommend that you try 'Windows To Go conversion' to fix the problem:

Tried that and it works fine until i install the surface book drivers and then it all goes wrong again on reboot. Freezes. Even if i do the conversion then it wont work. Will VHD mode work better?

No, I don't think so. Which version of Windows were you using? Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7? Are you sure you have performed the internal HDD to Windows To Go conversion? Do you have any other computers? I recommend that you try it on another computer to see if it starts properly.

I have tried on other PC works OK until its atttached to surface book 2 and drivers updated. Maybe SB2 hardware is incompatible with this approach to run windows from USB HDD.
