If an incremental backup fails during the process, what happens? Would the next incremental backup be sufficient to continue the chain until the next full backup?

Sure! All INCs are based on the last successful image of their target.

When the backup fails, the program will delete the backup image file generated by that backup, so it will not affect the next backup.
