Performance Drops on WinToUSB After Long-Term Use - davidsolano - 09-05-2025

Hi everyone,

I’ve been running Windows from a USB drive created with WinToUSB for a while now, and I’ve noticed something odd: after a few weeks of use, performance seems to get slower. Boot time increases, apps take longer to launch, and sometimes the system feels less responsive compared to when I first set it up.

Is this due to USB drive wear, fragmentation, or something else?

Has anyone tried solutions like trimming the drive, relocating the page file, or using different file systems (NTFS vs. exFAT) to improve performance?

Would switching to a faster NVMe enclosure make a big difference in long-term stability?
