Your understanding is correct regarding the license type. If you purchased a non-lifetime upgrade license (for the current version), it does not entitle you to major version upgrades (e.g., from 5.x to 6.x). However, the license itself is perpetual, meaning you have the right to use the purchased major version indefinitely.
I have installed a giveaway version, activated it, and created an iso, which works perfectly but expires. If I advance the BIOS date one year and boot from the ISO, its returns to its free version.
