This, right here, is why I HATE activation tied to hardware, or with any form of "time bomb" especially on "mission critical" software like backup software. It just causes confusion and problems down the road, every time.
As long as the "rescue media/iso" is unaffected, to buy me time for the "red tape" of getting the license fixed later, I can live with it though, if the price is right. I also work from the assumption that the company I bought the software from will eventually sell out to a new, hostile company, close completely, have server (licensing/web page) outages or some other situation that makes them unreachable.
They almost always do:
Slysoft > RedFox > poof/gone.
PowerQuest Drive Image > Norton Ghost = License gone.
...and on and on and on.
