23H2 -> 25H2 and HBS
#11
@JayDee,

There is a simple way to find out what is blocking safe ejection of an external USB drive: USB Safely Remove, by Crystal Rich (Google it).

Years ago, I got tired of the Windows Safely Eject component.  It was unreliable, and caused problems.  I invested in two lifetime licenses of the product for my laptop and desktop.  I have also gifted a friend with a lifetime license, who was also experiencing difficulties.  It turned out that the culprit in his case was Dropbox.  Interestingly, after my friend used that program, Dropbox stopped interfering.  Go figure?

Frequently, Windows Indexing will temporarily delay safe ejections, but the program I mentioned will identify each and every process that is blocking safe ejection.  There is a 30-day free trial.

I have NO affiliation with the product, other than being a satisfied user.  I have had zero problems ejecting external USB drives since I started to use it, back in 2019.

Personally, I would hesitant to blame Hasleo for the issue, but if it is the culprit, you will know.

Just a suggestion.  Have a great day.

Regards,
Phil

You can also use the built-in Resource Monitor from Windows or Process Explorer, both available for free from Microsoft, to quickly find blocking processes.

Have a look at this tutorial from Microsoft:

@JayDee,

As @garioch7 and @al3x mentioned, the most important thing right now is to determine which application is currently accessing the USB drive.

I did attach a screenshot of the blocking items early in this thread
I also ran resmon and got the same results.
Windows would not allow me to unlock or stop them

My solution:
Revert to win 11 24h2 (some extra work since I was past the 10 day revert time)

Reverting to 24H2 on 2 different computers... results: everything works
with no issues of USB disconnect.

I would be interested to know if any of you are running 25H2 without issues?

Well, your screenshot unfortunately doesn’t show what process blocks those files. ResMon should give you that information and I think that would be incredible helpful.

I’m running 25H2 without those problems, no locks whatsoever.

Like @al3x, I too am running 25H2 (Build 26200.7462), and I do not see any Hasleo processes blocking safe USB ejection.

Why not give the program I suggested a trial spin and see what is really blocking safe ejection?

Have a great day.

Thanks for the insights

Yes I did the resmon and (unfortunately) did not retain the data.
It would not let me terminate the blocking processes

For now, I'm going to stick with 24H2 so won't be doing anymore
diagnosis for the time being.

Good to know that 25H2 is OK for everyone else tho'
