Have you tried your backup more than once, it could be some a passing fault but probably not, although it is possible.
You could do a chkdsk /r but it will take a long time for 8 TB.
My first approach would be in any order you wish:
Try another port for the disk if possible.
Try another cable if possible.
Have a look in the Windows Event Viewer to see if there are any disk errors logged.
Download the disk manufacturer's diagnostic program and run it. CHKDSK is good but it is a general diagnostic, sometimes the manufacturer's diagnostic can catch things missed by chkdsk.
