HBS 5.8.2.0 - Changing partition size with retaining BitLocker doesn't work
#1
Hey,

I might've found a small error with the restoring process of BitLocker encrypted partitions.

If you boot from WinPE and try to restore a backup that contains a BitLocker encrypted partition, you now have the chance to retain the BitLocker encryption:

If you tick that box and try to resize the C: partition, this won't work though. I could only reduce the size by 1 MB:

If I go back and uncheck the "Retain BitLocker encryption" checkbox, I can freely resize the partition:

Is there a reason or technical limitation for that? Or is this just a small GUI error that prevents me from resizing?

Thanks,

Since the metadata of a BitLocker partition is fully encrypted, I don't know how HBS could do much of anything in the way of partition mgmt (which it really has to do when resizing).  Just a thought...

@al3x, we are sorry that, when restoring a BitLocker-encrypted partition and keeping it encrypted, shrinking the partition is currently not supported. This involves many technical difficulties. If time permits in the future, we will make improvements on this.

I hope you can understand.

Hi,

no worries, I was just wondering and trying to eliminate a possible error.
Resizing shouldn't be that important and there's always the workaround of restoring unencrypted and reapplying BitLocker anyway.

Thanks!

Keeping the encryption intact is fine when the partition size is unchanged or enlarged, but shrinking the partition is currently not supported. We will improve this when time permits in the future, which will require major modifications to the file system-related code.

Have a nice day!
