As admin already said: "We have removed this restriction in the new version.". So there's no more time limit in the new versions.

The backup/restore feature of HBS, which is the main feature of this software, works perfectly fine for USB drives.
Cloning whole drives or partitions *to* USB might be useful if your goal is to make Windows run from USB directly.
But you said it yourself: This was not your use case here anyway.

If you want to clone an old HDD to a new SSD and you don't want to go through the steps of backing upĀ and restoring from it, why don't you just do it the other way around then:
  1. Install HBO, create a fresh rescue medium and install it on a USB thumb drive.
  2. Remove your old HDD drive, insert your fresh SSD.
  3. Attach your old HDD drive to your USB caddy (or any other SATA USB reader).
  4. Boot from your new rescue medium and clone your old SATA drive to your new internal SSD drive.
  5. Done.
