As admin already said: "We have removed this restriction in the new version.". So there's no more time limit in the new versions.

The backup/restore feature of HBS, which is the main feature of this software, works perfectly fine for USB drives.
Cloning whole drives or partitions *to* USB might be useful if your goal is to make Windows run from USB directly.
But you said it yourself: This was not your use case here anyway.
If you want to clone an old HDD to a new SSD and you don't want to go through the steps of backing up and restoring from it, why don't you just do it the other way around then:
- Install HBO, create a fresh rescue medium and install it on a USB thumb drive.
- Remove your old HDD drive, insert your fresh SSD.
- Attach your old HDD drive to your USB caddy (or any other SATA USB reader).
- Boot from your new rescue medium and clone your old SATA drive to your new internal SSD drive.
- Done.
