2 questions: [1]Does fastboot need to be off , [2]disappearing backups
#1
1)
Does fastboot need to be turned off before you make a system image or is it safe to leave it on and make a system image?

2)
I had this very strange thing happen when I made a system image which I had validated (checked) upon image-finish and did a re-check through Tools > check image, both times there where no errors. When I rebooted the machine the image was gone, like it was never made ...
The image was made on a drive that plenty free space and no type of encryption.
But:
  • I used very long names with spaces and dashes (no special characters, just a-z, 0-9 and dash and underscore) but the image name was very long and the foldername in which the image was created also had a very long name.

  • When I booted the system with linux-lite-usb I saw that the drive I tried to save the image on was read-only. The other drives on my system where normal read-write. In windows I can read/write normally on it. But in linux (live environment) and in hasleo usb-boot I could not place the created system image. But I find it strange that the image could be created successfully without errors and validation did not yield errors

The issue is probably due to above 2 points I mentioned above but I find it strange that the image was created successfully in the backup-suite.
Sidenote:
  • All was done through the backup-suite usb live environment
  • In following backup attempts after I made the image I went to the option to "restore" the image just to look if it actually existed, and in the backup-suite the image existed! But when booting to windows they where gone!

Windows 11 24H2
Backup suite Version 5.4.2.2 (usb live environment)

Regarding the disappearing image, the solution for me is: use short names and make backup on read-write drive.

The only "issue" for me is, why did the backups succeed with 2x validation? (one on the finish of image creation and one through tools > check image + checking if the image exists by going to "restore")

Apologies for the long text.

First, you do not need to turn off Fast Startup before backing up. Regarding the issue of the backup image disappearing, we think you should first ensure that your USB drive has no quality issues. Then try the following to determine the cause:
1. Use shorter filenames to see if the problem persists, though we don't believe this is the cause.
2. Try another USB drive to see if the problem persists.

Sorry the explanation below might not make sense I highly suggest to do the "My advice" part below to just avoid any problems issues.

I think I have found the issue.
In windows when I right click the drive (the drive with the issue) > properties > Security > 'Group or usernames'  -> "Users" was set to read & execute only. I added the read and write permissions to it. Then rebooted into linux-live and saw that the drive this time was actually read AND write.

I checked this in the linux-live environment by right clicking the drive and then properties, It showed a bit different then the other drive on which I made image succesfully, but still the 'write' was now present on the drive that had the issue.

I then booted hasleo backup through usb and tried again to make the image on the drive that had was set to read only originally.
Now it succeeded! I'm almost sure this is a permission issue I do not know how/when the drive had it's write permission outside windows removed. And I do not advise to follow my solution unless you know what you are doing.

Still two strange things:
  • The drive on which I could make the backup successfully has set the "Users" permission for 'write' unchecked in windows(not set!!!) However in linux-live environment it shows read/write allowed .......
  • When doing a backup in hasleo on the drive that was only 'read' the backup succeeds and validation of the backup also succeeds BUT when booting in windows the backup does NOT exist...

MY ADVICE:
  • Just do a test-backup on the drive(s) you plan to do backups on, if backup exists in windows then everything should be fine.
  • If backup is "gone" in windows then start checking/doing things like: encryption, drive-check, drive permissions etc...
  • And don't use very long path's and filenames.

I used this linux live environment on an usb:
https://www.linuxliteos.com/

The latest version is 3GB contains all the necessary tools you might need and (in my case) booted old pc's (11+ years old) and a new pc (1 year old). But use whatever works best for you, there might be better distro's, this just worked for me.
