Rebuild MBR from ERD didn't work
#1
I lost power at my house today.  When the power came back on, my computer wouldn't boot.  It would POST, but Windows would not boot.  I narrowed this down to a problem with the MBR.

I booted to the HBS ERD (emergency recovery drive) and chose the option to Rebuild MBR.  It told me to "select the disk to rebuild MBR" but there was only one option in the drop down, and it was for the X: drive, which is one related to the USB drive I booted the HBS recovery environment from.  I opened the OS command line interface through HBS ERD and verified that the drive/partition my Windows system is installed on was recognized, and it was.

I booted the ERD of a competing product and rebuilt the MBR using that software.  It worked fine.

I should mention that I did boot the HBS ERD using an ISO image on Ventoy.  I'm not sure if that makes a difference.  But, I booted the ERD for the other product using Ventoy as well and it worked fine.

Had I not had access to the tools of the competing software package this process would have been far more difficult, especially because I only have the one computer now.  I feel kind of let down!

The Master Boot Record (MBR) is only used for traditional disks that use the MBR partitioning scheme. Therefore, the 'Rebuild MBR' function will only list disks that use the MBR partitioning scheme and will not list disks that use the GPT partitioning scheme.

Oh! That explains it then. I guess I'm just lucky I had an ERD for the other product on hand. I believe the other software I used still used the term MBR, but I see what you're saying. HSB does not include the capability of rebuilding the boot schemata (whatever it's called) of a GPT disk while the other software I used does.

Thank you for the clarification.

EDIT:
Now that I think about it, the other software might have just used the term "fix boot problems" for their tool, and it works for both MBR and GPT. I'm not at home now so I can't check and I was in a hurry to get to work on time when I was doing this.
