1st time disk clone was 20 min but after that 5 hours?
#1
Hello! New user here with a perplexing question. My PC has a speedy Samsung 9100 4TB nvme SSD C: drive and I cloned it to nice new Micron Crucial X10 external USB SSD drive. I did a disk to disk clone and pretty much kept all the defaults when stepping through the process. The drive has just under 1 TB of data on it and the first time I cloned the drive it took about 20 mins which was basically what I was expecting based on how much data was on the drive and the fact it was going from SSD to SSD.

But the second time and now the third time I cloned the drive, which is running right now, it is taking just over 5 hours, which I definitely was NOT expecting! And it is actually slightly less data being cloned now because the first time there was a Windows.old folder on the c: drive but I removed it after the first clone and nothing big has been installed since then. There were never any errors encountered and the resulting cloned drive after examination looked perfectly normal every time.

So the question remains why the heck is it taking so long now compared to that first clone? Before I start the clone process I make sure to shut off all the components of my anti-virius software so that it doesn't interfere and that's about it, I just let it do its thing. As I said I basically leave the defaults so I don't select sector by sector or any other options that would slow down the process. And check me if I'm wrong but shouldn't it be closer to 20 mins for a clone this size and SSD to SSD as opposed to 5 hours?

Any insight on what might be causing the slowdown or options I might be missing, etc. would be appreciated. It's not the end of the world because I do end up with a valid clone but it sure would be nice to figure out what is happening here.

Thanks, Wayne

@WayneSSD,

Welcome to the Hasleo Forums.  While I am a Moderator here, I lack the expertise to help you with your particular issue, and I don't want to give you incorrect advice.

If you would be patient and wait, just a bit, you will get a reply from someone far more knowledgeable than me within hours.

I hope that you can wait for that response, and welcome again.

Regards,
Phil

A couple of items:

- are you using the same USB ports (USB3 vs USB2) and same cable?
- has the Micron drive been checked for errors (chkdsk d: /F /X)?
- consider installing/running HDTune benchmark to check the performance

I would recommend you register the product with Samsung

I would also download the Samsung Magician software and make sure your firmware is up to date.

Then run some tests on the drive and make sure nothing is wrong with it.

@Bespoken and @AdvancedSetup's advice is correct.

  1. Different USB ports can have a significant impact on cloning speed. Therefore, please ensure that you connect your external USB drive to a USB 3.0 or higher port (for example, use the same port that worked well during the first clone).
  2. Test the performance of your USB drive using a tool such as HDTune benchmark or the utilities provided by Samsung (e.g., Samsung Magician).

Please verify these points first. If the speed test is normal but cloning is still extremely slow, we will continue to help you analyze the issue.

I love a happy ending. Even if it's one where I'm embarrassed I didn't catch this right away but I'll definitely take it as a learning experience. The problem was I was so convinced that I used the top mounted USB C port on my pc for all of my cloning endeavors, I didn't even entertain the fact that it could been a different port I used the first time.

You guys had mentioned Samsung Magician and it's software that I am very familiar with having used it for years. I have been using it lately ever since I picked up a Samsung 9100 Pro 4TB NVMe SSD to go into my new PC build last November. You know, when prices were reasonable. That cost me $400 and now it’s $1800! I also picked up 64gb of fast Corsair low latency RAM that cost me $215 and now it’s over $1500. Boy did I luck out with my timing, absolutely ridiculous we’ve gotten to this point.

So I used Samsung Magician to do a quick benchmark on my new portable SSD, the Crucial X10 USB-C 4TB which has a rating of read 2000MB/s. When the benchmark came up with 50MB/s while plugged into the top mounted port, I instantly knew that I had not in fact used the top mounted port and had to have used one of the rear mounted ports which were obviously much faster. Because when I then plugged it into the fastest USB C port back there it came up with a read speed of just under 1900MB/s, indicating if was finally running at full speed.

I left it connected and then did another disk to disk clone and when I mentioned before it took about 20 minutes for the first time to complete, I now realize from getting more used to the software that I was quoting the estimated time, not the actual time it took. Because when I did it this time I saw that the estimated time was again about 20 minutes. I shut off the monitor like I did the first time and came back in about 15 minutes and it was already done. This time I noticed that the elapsed time was actually much less.. 7 mins 18 seconds to be exact. Hell yeah. I have to admit when I saw that I yelled now THAT’S what I’m talking about!  :-)

I also wanted to mention how much I'm liking this Hasleo Backup Suite. I like the no nonsense concise UI that just gets to the point and lets you get the job done, nice work everyone.

So thanks everyone for your help, really appreciate it.

Lots of lessons to be learned with hardware and programs. Very enjoyable if you like that kind of thing.

Hasleo has a unique UI for their products with the fixed screen size. It is not my preferred model but it does the job. HBS is now my #1 as it has replaced a different system backup program and a file backup program.

@WayneSSD, glad to hear you got to the bottom of the issue. We will continue to maintain a clean and intuitive design direction.

@Bespoken, thank you for your feedback. In fact, you can still drag the edge of the window to resize it, but only within a certain range. We are glad that HBS has become your go-to backup tool!

Thank you all for your recognition and support.
