Hasleo Forum MyBB Tips

This General Forum "Tips" Topic was the result of questions being asked by Forum members, who find the MyBB Forum software less than intuitive.

Our hope is that this series of "Tips" posts will assist our Forum members to be able to effectively use the MyBB Forum software.

This Topic is locked to keep it concise, without extraneous posts. If Forum members want to respond to a Topic post with questions or comments, they should open a topic in the Hasleo General Forum.

You may notice that some quotes have a "green arrow pointing right" after the name of the author of the quote.  By hovering your mouse over that green arrow and clicking it, you will be taken immediately to the quoted post.  In such cases, the same link is included at the bottom of the quote, because it is understood that some new Forum members may be unaware of that feature of the Forum software program. That is why the visible link is repeated at the bottom of the post.

Posts that are quoted from "Forum Team discussions" are available only to the Forum Administrator and to Moderators.  As a result, no link is shown. There will be no green arrow and no link at the bottom of the post.

Most, if not all, of the posts you will see in this "Tips" Topic will not have that green arrow or a following post hyperlink.  That is because the Editor, garioch7, was continually baffled by the idiosyncrasies of when creating posts for the HBS FAQs Topic. During the Forum Team review process in the Moderators Forum, admin and al3x provided invaluable assistance to him. He was shown how to fully exploit the capabilities of MyBB.

Topics/posts about MyBB were rarely raised in the HBS Backup Forum, so that is why most, if not all, of the cited posts in the "Tips" will have no hyperlinks.

More future posts are being considered as well, based on a comprehensive review of Forum posts dating back to when the HBS product was first released in May 2021 that identified common questions.

We hope this Topic and its posts will assist our users and customers. Thank you for selecting the Hasleo Backup Suite as your backup solution and for joining our Forums.

The second Primary Link opens the MyBB, Version 1.6 MyBB documentation, whereas the current version of MyBB is Version 1.8.  That is intentional, as explained by the Forum Administrator.

(10-14-2026, 01:59 AM)admin Wrote:MyBB does not provide MyCode documentation for V1.8. The V1.6 documentation you found is outdated, but the core MyCode syntax it lists remains compatible with V1.8, so you can refer to it directly without concern.

You will also note, if you are accustomed to using BB code on other older Forum platforms, that the MyBB implementation of some BB codes is somewhat different from that used on those Forums.  Some users, like the Editor, were surprised when some BB codes he used on a well-known Forum did not work correctly with MyBB.  The very basic BB codes such as bold, italic, and underline are identical, but the quote and other more complex BB codes are unique to MyBB, so Forum members are encouraged to review the two primary links.

The question of why the Hasleo Forums chose MyBB as its Forum software platform and whether it will continue to use MyBB has been raised previously, since some other Forums use more sophisticated Forum software platforms.

The Forum Administrator explained the reasons for this decision.

(10-15-2026, 01:11 PM)admin Wrote:Hasleo Forums was launched in 2014. At that time, the popular open-source forum platforms included MyBB, phpBB, and Discourse, among others. phpBB was powerful, but its layout was traditional and its admin backend had many options, which created a learning curve for new administrators. Discourse was still too young. MyBB's default appearance was generally considered more modern and attractive than phpBB's, so we ultimately chose MyBB.

After years of use, MyBB has indeed shown some issues. That said, we currently have no plans to replace MyBB. Migrating to another forum platform would be a major undertaking and risks losing data and links; unless a new platform can fully support migration from MyBB, such a move would be difficult to justify.

Since MyBB will be the Hasleo Forums software platform for many more years, it is important that our Forum members be provided with the information to use it to its full potential.  This initiative by the Forum Administrator and the Forum Team is intended to address that need.

To facilitate our Forum members being able to test what they have learned about MyBB from this Topic, a new Testing and Scribbles Topic is being created in the General Forum.  Please refer to the Post 1 of that new Topic for details about posting in that Topic.

General Tips

Primary Source: @garioch7

This post is an introduction to creating posts on the Hasleo Forums and some other common and simple issues or questions that do not justify separate posts in this Topic.  As a result, Forum members may expect that this Post 2 will be frequently modified as our members raise issues or questions that the initial version of this Post 2 did not address.

The first part is for the information of Forum members who are not familiar with Forums in general.  More advanced users, who are members of other Forums, may skip the first part.

"NETIQUETTE" FUNDAMENTALS

In general, the purpose of Forums is to exchange information and ask questions about issues that participants might encounter, reply to questions, and offer new information.  All Forums want their members to use proper Forum "netiquette", which is the etiquette that Forum members should use when communicating with other Forum members, regardless of the Forum to which they belong.

Here are some basic rules that respect Forum "netiquette":

  1.   Please avoid writing your posts in CAPITALS.  That is considered "shouting" at other Forum members.  Your post is not more important than any other post, and capitalized posts are harder to read for most people.

  2.   You should always keep your posts as concise as possible, and break them up into easily readable paragraphs.  Forum members usually do not want to read a solid "wall of text".

  3.   Please do not quote entire posts.  Select only the information applicable to that comment you wish to contest or explain more fully, and only quote that.  If there is more than one quote you wish to respond to, break your posts up into the individual quotes and express your views on each of them individually.

  4.   You should always familiarize yourself with the Forum Rules of the particular Forum you are posting on, especially regarding spam, hyperlinks, and the use of AI.

  5.   You should never post frivolous posts.  Post count "padding" is unwelcome on all Forums.

  6.   Posting the same inquiry on multiple Forums simultaneously is not encouraged here or elsewhere.  The Hasleo Forums deal only with Hasleo products.  You have access to the Hasleo experts here, including the Forum Administrator, who participates daily.

  7.   All posts on all of the Hasleo Forums are constantly monitored by the Hasleo Forum Team Moderators and the Forum Administrator.  If you think that another Forum member has violated the Forum Rules, please report the alleged violation to a Hasleo Forum Team member via Private Message (PM).  They are all listed at the bottom left of the Forum Home page by clicking the "Forum Team" button.

ASSORTED HASLEO FORUM TIPS

One important tip is to click the "New Reply" button rather than using the "Quick Reply" that appears below the last message in a Topic, so that you have the advantage of the full range of MyBB formatting codes and the ability to attach files to your post and images in your post.  The Quick Reply box is specifically for that purpose: very brief replies that need no formatting or attachments.

It is advisable to use the Preview option when composing your posts and before posting them, to get a realistic view of how the post will appear when posted.  You can, if you prefer, start posting in the "Quick Reply" and then press the Preview button to gain the full-featured post composition box.

The Preview shows you exactly how your post will appear if you post it.  It is also necessary for other purposes, as you will learn in future Topic posts.  If the post preview doesn’t look right, then don’t post your reply.  It will look identical to the preview version if the formatting or other issues are not fixed first.

Many Forum members accustomed to other Forums precede a member's name with the "@" symbol.  On more sophisticated Forum platforms, that "pings" the member that s/he has been mentioned.  MyBB lacks that capability, but using the "@" symbol leaves no doubt that you are referring to a Forum member.

At the Hasleo Forums, all members, including the Moderators, are unpaid volunteers.  MyBB does not offer the "Like" option to express appreciation for the assistance of another member, but it does have a Rate button.  Please make use of that button to rate a post +1 to convey your gratitude to those Forum members who have assisted you or when a member's post has been particularly helpful

Before posting about your issue, please first check the Hasleo Backup Suite Articles and Tutorials (HBS A/Ts).  There is a weekly-updated index of all of those HBS A/Ts to be found as a pinned Topic in this Forum.  If you cannot find an answer there, please also check the Hasleo Backup Suite – Frequently Asked Questions pinned Forum Topic, Post 1.  The latter half of that first post contains an index of all published FAQ posts.

You may also conduct a search of this Forum.  Note that if your search criteria are more than one word, you must enclose your search criteria in quotes; otherwise, MyBB will only search for the first word or number in your search criteria.

Forum members are encouraged to post about their issue(s) if no published documentation, outlined above, adequately answers their question(s).  You may, of course, contact Hasleo Support, but posting your issue in the Forum, gives you access to the Forum experts, but even more importantly, your issue might be encountered by other Forum members in the future, so posting about it on the Forum helps not only you, but other Hasleo users who might encounter a similar issue.

As a Forum member, you are not permitted to delete your own posts.  This is not a limitation of MyBB, but a decision made by the Forum Team after much consideration.  You may request the deletion of your post(s) by sending a PM to a  member of the Hasleo Forum Team explaining your reasons for your request.  You should be aware that once you post on the Hasleo Forum, the post "belongs" to the Hasleo Forum.

Please do not use the Reply since that adds the entire previous post to your reply at the top, unless that post is only one or two sentences about which you wish to post comments.  Quoting long posts, when you only want to comment on a part of it, adds to the length of your new post, and it unnecessarily takes up Hasleo Forum server space.

Forum members are encouraged to make their posts interesting and easily readable.  The use of color and other formatting codes for words and phrases greatly adds to the readability of your post.  Take a little extra time to exploit the formatting options in MyBB.  Your readers will appreciate that.

Many new Forum members, including the author in the past, run into a problem if they compose their posts in a word-processing program.  MyBB does not "understand" the formatting of such posts copied and pasted from word-processing programs.  As a result, your post will probably have multiple incorrect formatting codes in it that MyBB tries unsuccessfully to "understand".  Even quote marks, if they are typical of a word-processing program and curved inward and outward, can sometimes be misinterpreted by MyBB.

One solution, when pasting from a word-processing program into a Hasleo Forum post, is to use Ctrl-Shift-V, rather than Ctrl-V, to strip out most of the word-processing format codes, or to right-click and selecting "Paste without Formatting".

Another option is to use a simple text processor like Notepad or Notepad++ to compose your posts.  You can then add the formatting codes within MyBB to your draft, before posting it.  That eliminates the "rogue" codes that MyBB cannot "understand".

Finally, you should familiarize yourself with the Forum Rules so that you do not unknowingly violate them.  The Hasleo Forum and its sub-Forums require that all posts be polite and civil.  The Hasleo Forum aims to be a welcoming and respectful place for all Forum members.

The next post in this series will deal with how to use "Source Mode" to take advantage of its capabilities.  If you want your post to be noticed, then demonstrating care in composing it is appreciated by your fellow Forum members.

If any information is missing, you have suggestions to improve this FAQ post, or a suggestion for a future HBS FAQs Topic post, please send a PM (Private Message) to @garioch7.
