HBS causing machine reset when doing a Full backup
#1
I have been suffering from a persistent issue with HBS.
Last full backup was successfully completed about 3 months ago

I have set an incremental backup schedule :-
  • medium compression
  • the 1st of each month
  • start if missed
  • after 3 incremental do a full

Since the last scheduled full backup I have been plagued with my machine crashing during a backup at between 60% to 75%

I have tried to find logs for HBS, but I can' find anything of any use to track down what is crashing my machine.

Any hints gratefully appreciated.

@Mike,

Welcome to the Hasleo Forums.  I am sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulties with the Hasleo Backup Suite (HBS).  The Hasleo Support Team will want logs because there are so many possibilities to explain what is happening.

Open HBS.  On the Title bar, over at the right is a little box with a "ʌ" in the middle.  Click that, scroll down to "Save log file".  Select a destination and a name for the file, or use the default.  Attach that file to your next post via the box at the bottom of the Post Compose window, by dragging the file into it.  That will attach your logs/file to your post.

It is nighttime in China now, but Hasleo Support, and the Forum Administrator (@admin) will be back online in about six hours from now.

They will respond within 24 hours, less time if it is not complicated to find the issue causing your problems.

Have a great day.

Regards,
Phil

Thanks @ garioch7, with your help I have now obtained the logs, which I have attached (hopefully)

@Mike,

Perfect!  Now, the Hasleo Support Team will be able to identify what is causing your issue(s).  Thank you for assisting them to assist you.

I don't have the expertise to analyze them, so let us wait to see what @admin has to say.

Have a great day.

@Mike,

Thank you.  That is all very helpful.  It tends to suggest that it might not be a Hasleo Backup Suite issue but rather a network issue.  That said, we should await an expert opinion since a comprehension of issues affecting remote networks backups is far beyond my knowledge level.  Confused

Have a great day.

@garioch7 That screenshot with the network connection is just an RDP remote connection that dropped during the backup. I think Mike just tries to show that this was the last moment before the server crashed.

@Mike: Phil already pointed out the HBS log file. That might be helpful, so thanks for that. Another thing that might help you in the meantime: Have you tried analyzing what driver or program causes the crash? I like to use BlueScreenView for that to get an overview of what might've happened on your server.

You can download that little helper from here:
https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html

If you run that on your server, you might be able to see what program/driver etc. caused the issue exactly. This could also be a hardware failure that kicks in under load or things like a faulty RAM module, but sometimes the causing driver gives a hint.

There is no BSOD.

RDP session is dropped because the server re-boots. I can run it for a whole working day and it's stable.
I even resorted to taking a video of the RDP app, to try to see if HBS slows down before the server crash, and nothing was obvious.

Over the course of the last few weeks I have tried lots of things that both CoPilot and Claude have suggested.
As a senior software developer, I am very wary of simply applying what the AI engines say, without sanity checking the suggestions first.

You say there's no BSOD, but you talk about a "crash". Are you really sure the server doesn't give a BSOD and then reboots as a result afterwards?

If it is a clean reboot, you should find some evidence of a shutdown in the Windows EventLog right before the reboot. Have you checked that?

I have trawled through the event log and nothing seems to be relevant.
There are no dump files generated.

My developer guy says this bug (in my system) is down to on or more of :-
- Version of HBS
- Windows updates

If I can get hold of an older version of HBS I am willing to give this a try.
