Forum Rules
#11
Having just read the suggested v2 Forum Rules from @garioch7 (just back from travel),  I find them comprehensive and inclusive of most items Forums have to deal with.

My only suggestion would be, under Item #9, to disallow any EXECUTABE download links (LINKs leading directly to executable files), except by ADMIN.  As we all know, direct download LINKS in any environment can be very extremely dangerous as far as what's actually downloaded by the LINK.  Many Forums I have perused disable this capability and for good reason... security issues.

Other than that, I think the Forum Rules look great.

Also just read v2 of the forum rules. Looks very clear to me, good writing as well - so all in all a solid foundation I think.

Also support the executable links rule, don't think direct downloads should be needed by users.
But then there's ZIP files and other archive formats which technically could also contain executables. So where to draw the line here?

Nevertheless, I think the bare minimum should be blocking executables itself to prevent unwanted execution by not paying attention for a sec.

@admin,

Thank you for your last post.  I also thank @Froggie and @al3x for their feedback.  I will amend my draft Forum Rules to add the prohibition to linking to executable files in posts or including executable files in attachments.  That is great feedback, with which I totally agree.  Give me a few hours and I will create Draft 3 with that addition and upload it to my Google Drive account and post back with the download link, since I have run out of attachment space on this Forum.

I will also be happy to create an initial draft of the Welcome Post for this subforum.  I will need your help with that to fill in some blanks; for example, I don't know what the ranks are, and what qualifies people to those ranks.  There seem to be limited ranks, which is a good thing.  So far, I have identified Junior, Member, and Senior Member, two more, and then Administrator, which has seven stars.  From what I have seen, everyone starts out with two stars, but first-time posters are not identified as Junior Members, but they have two stars, so that is a bit confusing to me ... ?.  Shouldn't they start with one star?

My first draft of the Welcome post will be in need of much editing to properly reflect the goals of the Hasleo Team and its objectives with respect to this Forum, but it can serve as a starting point.  Tell me what you want added, enhanced, or otherwise amended, and I will be happy to do that.

Have a great day.  Be back later.

Regards,
Phil

@admin,

You can delete my "Ranks and Ratings" topic, since it is being included in the new "Welcome to the Hasleo Forum" topic.

I have completed revising Draft 3 of the Forum Rules:  The Google Drive download link is: Forum Rules - Draft 3.

I have completed Draft 1 of the Welcome to Hasleo Forum:  The Google Drive download link is: Hasleo Forum Welcome Post - Draft 1.

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in creating posts to deal with Forum "housekeeping" issues.  We want the Forum to a safe place for young and old to visit.

Have a great day.

Regards,
Phil

Regarding member rankings, our Hasleo forum is built with MyBB. Since we're not very experienced with forum management, we're currently using all the default configurations. I've just checked the member ranking settings, and the default setup is as follows:
                            Minimum Posts  Number of Stars
Newbie                 0                      1
Junior Member      1                      2
Member               50                     3
Senior Member     250                   4
Posting Freak       750                    5

We welcome any suggestions on how to improve or customize the member ranking system.

@admin,

Thank you for your very kind words.  It was a pleasure for me to create the "Welcome" Post, but I was dubious whether it would accurately reflect your commitment to your customers/users.  Anyone who has suggestions to further amend it should post in this topic so that we can discuss and fine-tune it.

With respect to the Member Rankings, I think it needs some serious work.  First off, I would find it offensive to identified as a "Posting Freak" after contributing 750+ posts.  I think it is disrespectful of the members who have contributed so many posts to the Forum.  Being called a "freak" is derogatory.  It does not accord with the professionalism and courteous nature that I think is the aim of the Hasleo Forums.

You asked for my suggestions.  You have seven stars available.  I say: use them.  It is understood that seven stars are reserved to the Forum Administrator.  It is important for Hasleo to respectfully recognize the contributions of those who regularly come here to assist other Forum members.  The only "reward" for those members is their Rank, and their Reputation.  We all crave some recognition for the time and expertise that we contribute to the Forums to which we belong and contribute.

Here are my suggestions:

1 Star:   Newbie (0 to 10 posts)     Note: I have never been a member of any Forum where a first post makes a Newbie and Junior Member
2 Stars:  Junior Member (11 to 99 posts)
3 Stars:  Senior Member (100 to 249 posts)
4 Stars:  Contributor (250 to 499 posts)
5 Stars:  Senior Contributor (500 to 999 posts)
6 Stars:  Expert (1,000+ posts)
7 Stars:  Forum Administrator

I will delay amending the Welcome Post Ranks until I get feedback from you and other Forum members.  These are just my rough ideas.  I definitely think the current Member Rankings system needs serious improvement.

Have a great day.

Regards,
Phil
