Clone Win OS to ext. drive without losing it on laptop?
Posted by: Davidslegend - 12-04-2014, 12:48 AM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - No Replies

Hello:

I read about WinToUSB on Lifehacker.com & was wondering if I could use my current Win laptop to clone the OS to try it out on an external hard drive.

Goal 1: Run Windows on External Hard drive when using my Mac computer
Goal 2: Run Office on the drive as well
Goal 3: Not lose current Window OS 8.1 on my second PC

Thank you for your response.

Best Regards,
davidslegend

Question Clean up the Windows To Go drive
Posted by: davidinfodom - 11-22-2014, 08:42 AM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (4)

Hi All,
I just installed a 8.1 Enterprise on WinToGo disk.
And so I of course tried to connect the drive on several different machines, just to test if it was really working on any machine or not: of course it worked great each time.
Thus I realized something: each time you connect the WinToGo on a new machine, it will first install new files to adapt itself to the host so it can run smoothly.
Therefore each time we do that, the available free space on the disk is of course decreasing.
So here comes the question : is there a way to clean up the WinToGo drive to remove all the files which match a host we won't use anymore ?

Hoping someone will know, I thank you in advance for your feedback.

KR,
David

(Also just for information for those who would be interested : my WinToGo drive is an SSD Crucial M500 240Gb, placed in an IcyBox USB 3.0 compatible UASP.
And honestly this Win 8.1 ToGo drive works much faster than my current Win 7 x64 host system standing an WD500gb !! Really awesome Smile )

Sad Does not Boot
Posted by: Peeker - 11-18-2014, 12:18 PM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (1)

ok heres the problem I have used wintousb to install windows 7 64 bit on a PNY 128gb USB 3.0 flash drive. the program does the install fine, very slowly but fine. I have tried using both an ISO and my install disc the problems is the drive wont boot every time I try I get the "Disk read error Press cntl-alt-del" I have formatted the drive to be bootable but every time I use the program it insists on reformatting the drive again and I think its wiping out the boot sector so my basic question is what the heck is going on here? and how do I fix this problem? I just bought this drive specifically for this purpose so I don't want to waste $50.00 so could someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong here.....

USB Driver change by Windows 7 SP1 Update
Posted by: itatang - 11-11-2014, 11:48 AM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (1)

I prepare the Windows 7 on USB drive and it work perfectly until I have update the OS from Windows Update to SP1.

I try to bypass the SP1 update by installing Windows 7 to a internal drive and update it to SP1. Afterwards, I create a WIM image for the internal drive. Using the WIM file, I create a USB drive again with WinToUSB and it works again.

I think that the driver for usb boot may be corrupted by the SP1.

Can we update the registry or repair the WinToUSB driver whenever the USB drive is destroyed by the update in the further avoiding to start the process of create USB drive from the starting again.
