Emergency Disk - Download Win PE Components?
#41
I tried the boot option 3, but the generated ED environment did not include drivers for my laptop keyboard or wi-fi. I am sure that these can be added to the build but is likely a lot of trial and error effort involved unless there are some quick pointers. It would be great if these drivers also included the function for my keyboard backlighting.

Thanks to admin and HBS team again.
Works for me too. It is full screen when booted from my Ventoy USB and similarly sized to the desktop version when run from the boot menu. One more obstacle from switching to HBS removed!

@Epictetus:

Quote:@garioch7 - this should go in the thread in the FAQ you so thoughtfully created on this topic. Also, in that thread the HERE - pointing to the download of the HBS WinPE Downloader is not active and should be made active to help everyone in the process of making their rescue disks.

I did not notice that yesterday, for which I sincerely apologize.  Blush

I thank you for your suggestion.  @admin sent me a PM today to ask if I had seen it, but I had not paid attention scanning through the posts in this Thread.

Please send me PMs in the future to ensure that I see your suggestions, and those by other members.

I was in discussions with the @admin today about your great proposal.  It is now my top priority, but like you, and other Forum members, I cannot devote as many hours per day to this Forum as I would like.

Also, you, and others, should understand that amending the first HBS FAQs Topic post, and adding new HBS FAQs posts, is a collegial effort that involves me creating a new draft version, submitting it to the Forum Team for comments, and, when finally approved, (re)posting it.

The Forum Team members have their lives too, so usually revisions and new HBS FAQs posts will be in the "under review" stage for two or three days; but, if corrections need to be made, a new draft has to be created, and reviewed again, and so on until I get it right ...

This is to ensure that HBS FAQs Topic posts are as accurate as possible.  I don't have the imaging expertise of other members of the Forum Team, so I need them to review and make any corrections to my drafts.

All of that to say again that amending the first HBS FAQs Topic post about Emergency Disks is my top priority.  I do sincerely thank you for your meritorious suggestion.  Hopefully, you will see an amended post in the next week ...

Have a great day, and thank you again.

Regards,
Phil

Yes, Phil - I will PM you in future. Didn't know that was the protocol here but I do now.

Also, in this thread there is a related issue about creating ED and screen size which could also be a suitable FAQ too.

Cheers
Chris

Likewise here too in both a Ventoy boot USB disk with the HBS ED iso as one of several iso on said USB and also a dedicated USB HBS ED.

Thank you for your feedback. The issue you raised is indeed a typical challenge with WinPE: as a lightweight pre-installation environment, it does not include the Wi-Fi stack by default, nor does it support many non-standard peripheral drivers. We will try to address these issues in the future, but we cannot guarantee success in every environment.

One possible solution, possible mind - not certain, is to run HBS WITHIN Sergei Strelec's WinPE (SS). This package which I run when I need to from a Ventoy USB, contains MANY drivers which are loaded during booting up and many others which you can load by choice from a very conveniently organised menu. SS always finds and makes my home WiFi network usable in WinPE. SS also has HBS as one of several backup software options (great free advertising for  HBS there) - it does not yet have the latest HBS, but no doubt the next SS update will since he is very up-to-date with his updates.

I find SS so good in fact that I don't really need a separate ED USB - but I make two just in case.

Please keep in mind though that the version used in SS is modified and comes with a heavily changed and compressed EXE file.
This is usually done to prevent reverse engineering but god knows what was added besides a crack.
I personally wouldn't trust that with my backups. Use at your own risk.

@Epictetus,

Thank you for your suggestions.  At this very early stage, I have to assess the importance of FAQs when determining which to write next.  The next FAQ post content has already been decided, and I must comb through all of the HBS Forum posts from the beginning (2021) looking for common issues that should be assigned a high priority.

My time is limited, so I don't expect to be able to produce more than two or three FAQs per month, all going well, in addition to my other activities on this Forum, and on the other Forums to which I belong and participate.

I will add the qt.conf file issue to my low priority FAQ list.  In the beginning, I want to deal with the really common issues and questions, based on my review of past posts, and discussions with the Forum Team members, including @admin.  The Forum Administrator has the final say: this is a Hasleo Forum, not my Forum!  We all collaborate to make the Hasleo Forum better.

I have taken the time to explain this, so that you might understand that it is nothing personal about my "weighting" of FAQs suggestions, but with this being a solo undertaking as of now, I have to establish priorities, so that the most common issues/questions are dealt with first.  That said, we DO appreciate your suggestions, and they are noted.

And thank you for agreeing to send me a PM with each suggestion.  That is the recommended approach so that I do make note of them.  Please also include the hyperlink of the post that you think is worthy of inclusion, so I don't mistakenly select another post.

Have a great day.

Regards,
Phil

We should not be discussing Sergei Strelec's WinPE in any way shape or form. Doing so suggests that Hasleo in some way condones the use of cracked software, which I'm sure is not the case.
