Important: Windows KB5083769 update may cause backups to get stuck
#21
@lavande, We are in big trouble if MS does not know the origin of the problem. But assuming that they know or can determine the cause then the question is will they do anything about it and when.

I have successfully done a few backups on multiple PC's with MR8.1 and HBS. Some completed normally and others saved the backup file but did not complete their wrap-up.

This issue only occurs on a small number of computers. As @lavande pointed out, does Microsoft know the root cause of the problem? Regardless, users should at least be informed about whether Microsoft is working on a fix.

Dear all,

We have made some changes to temporarily work around this issue. Please try the version below to see if the problem still persists.
https://www.easyuefi.com/backup-software...260506.exe

Please note that this is only a temporary solution, so users who are not experiencing the issue should not install this version. Ultimately we still need to wait for Microsoft to fix the VSS issue.

Please let us know the result.

Best regards,

Hello,

I tried the temporary version, and it worked fine. I performed a full system backup, and it started right away and completed successfully, as it's used to.

This works around the issue for affected systems until an official fix (probably by MS) is shipped.

Thank you for the effort ^^

Good.  I'm glad this works for you.

Unfortunately it did not work for me.
It's important that everyone distinguishes between disk backup and files backup and system backup

HBS has continued to work fine for all my disk backups
It's the file backups that fail (and for me) still fail using this release.

BTW the cancel button triggers the cancel but it never completed...
I had to close via the task manager.

The new temp version failed for me.
Back up hangs with:
"127 (Waiting for the asynchronous operation to finish...)" as last entry in log file.

File backup of my Document Folder.

When people are testing this and reporting their results, it may help if they also check their Core Isolation Setting.
A while back Core Isolation was being turn off for better gaming performance.
Note that  Microsoft Vulnerable Driver Blocklist is under  Core Isolation Setting.

For mine, all are turn on:
Memory integrity:                            on
Kernel-mode Hardware .... :             on
Local Security Authority protection:   on
Microsoft Vulnerable Driver Blocklist: on (And greyed out)

The 260506 temp version worked correctly for me doing:
1. System backup
2. Partition backup
3. File backup

However, for #3 I had run my VSS batch fix first so that "vssadmin list writers" would complete normally. Without doing this the backup would hang at 0% in the calculation phase. Pressing Cancel would not terminate the process. HBS had to be forced closed using Task Manager.

Core Isolation is on for all 4 items.

Hi
A question about the sequence of running your script. Do you have to run it every, time before the backup, or only once?
Power-on
run script
back up,
back up
keep going
or is it
Power-on
run script
back up,
run script
back up
and repeat.

Thanks

The script was not necessary for the System Backup or Partition backup. It was only needed for the file backup. I have not done a file backup where VSS fails during the process. For multiple file backups it may be necessary to:
run script
reboot
backup

rinse and repeat.

With the temp version fixing the System/Partition backup maybe they can do the same for file backup.
