Running PS2 Emulator Setup From Portable Windows USB Drive
#1
Hi everyone,
I recently started using WinToUSB to create a portable Windows setup for gaming and testing software on different PCs. One thing I noticed is that PS2 emulators like PCSX2 sometimes behave differently when running from a Windows USB environment compared to a normal installation.
On one system the emulator works perfectly, but on another I get slowdowns and BIOS detection issues. I wanted to ask if anyone here has experience optimizing portable Windows setups specifically for older game emulators.
I have been testing different BIOS files and settings from this resource ps2biosonline.

So far it helped me understand compatibility better, but I still want to improve stability and loading speed when booting Windows from USB.
Does anyone recommend specific WinToUSB settings, drive formats, or performance tweaks for gaming/emulation use?
Would really appreciate suggestions from experienced users here. Thanks!

Hi,

in theory a portable Windows should not slow down an emulator like the one you described. Most of the emulated software should run directly from RAM so USB speed wouldn't be an issue. Maybe the initial start of the game might be a bit slower. But then again - the PS2 back in the days had a DVD drive that allowed for a maximum of 4x (around 5.28 MB/s), so that's still at least 20 times slower than typical USB3.

You said BIOS detection issues. What issues are you having exactly? Emulators also emulate the PS2 BIOS, so this shouldn't intervene with the PC hardware and I'm almost sure this can't be fixed with a WinToUSB setting.

BTW, I removed your direct link to the resource you mentioned. Although PS2 emulators itself are legal, the BIOS files as well as the game images remain subject to Sony's copyright. Thanks for understanding.
