Windows 10 Live don't load anymore on SanDisk Extreme Pro
#1
I hadn't used my SanDisk Extreme Pro 128 GB flash drive—which runs Windows 10 Live—for quite a few months. When I plugged it in, Windows 10 naturally prompted me to install updates, so I did. After the required restart, however, Windows 10 Live wouldn't load; the Windows logo appeared on the screen but remained frozen. I performed a hard shutdown, turned it back on after a minute, and encountered the same problem. That was when I learned that after two or three hard shutdowns, a screen offering startup assistance or repair options should appear.
That screen did appear, but it froze as well. I performed another hard shutdown, and a blue screen appeared with a message like "preparing for repair" or something similar. Once again, everything stalled. I waited hopefully for half an hour but eventually had to turn off the computer.

Is the Windows 10 Live installation irreparably broken? Is there anything else I can do?

Everything is back to normal. Among several tips I found online, one suggested using a USB 2.0 port the next time I booted up Windows 10 Live.
That is exactly what I did. After a moment, I saw an actual Windows update taking place. It took a little while, but then the familiar desktop appeared.
And this raises a new question: should I stick to using the USB 2.0 port every time I want to use Windows 10 Live on my SanDisk drive, or can I—or is it safe to—try plugging the drive back into the blue USB 3.x port?

Installing Windows updates may cause Windows To Go to fail to start normally. In such case we recommend that you try the 'Windows To Go conversion' feature of WinToUSB to convert it to portable Windows USB drive, then try to see if it can boot on your computer via USB. Here's the user guide:

USB 2.0 ports are too slow and may cause Windows to run less smoothly. If booting from a USB 2.0 port really can fix the startup issue, I think once Windows can start normally, you should still run Windows through a USB 3.x port.
