Tested from within WinPE - a tad faster than Macrium - quite happy
#1
I ran my first full backup today from WinPE mode and it completed in 8 minutes, a tad faster than Macrium.
Image was 95GB using medium compression so just slightly bigger than Macrium's 93GB.
Mounted the image just to check and looked fine.
Quite happy so far.

Which compression level does Macrium use?

Macrium is variable but I go for medium compression, as the file size is about the same but just takes longer...

I’m just curious why Hasleo’s backup image file is 2 GB larger than Macrium’s.

I’m just curious why Hasleo’s backup image file is 2 GB larger than Macrium’s.

I suspect they have their own in-house compression algorithm, slightly better than the off-the-shelf ones in the public domain.

As far as we know, the newer versions of Macrium use zstd, just like Hasleo. It might be related to file filtering, and we'll analyze this issue when we have time. Have you tried backing up on Windows?

No - I *only* backup from the WinPE environment to eliminate potential issues while Windows is running...

Got it, backing up under WinPE does avoid potential interference from Windows while it's running. But in reality, the vast majority of users just back up directly under Windows, and it doesn't cause many problems.

This also explains the size differences. When backing up from WinPE directly, VSS is not available so VSS snapshots residing in C:\System Volume Information\ will be backed up as well.  Another good reason to always back up from within Windows.

Also, there's the HBS rescue disk that was created, which can take up to 1 GB. If the HBS backup was taken afterwards, it probably contains that ISO as well, increasing the image size slightly.

I'm wondering - what online stories are you referring to? So far, I haven't come across any posts reporting problems with data backup from within Windows. And if there really was a problem, I'm almost sure this could be fixed pretty easily. All it takes is a log file that helps with the analysis.

Hasleo has fixed smaller issues in the past many times solely with the help of reports and log files. In my opinion that's one of the biggest strengths of Hasleo - users are taken seriously and bugs are fixed fast.

Cheers,
