  Excruciating disc speed - win10 ent - usb 3.1 - NVME
Posted by: blistovmhz - 12-13-2019, 11:32 AM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (5)

Trying to get win10 Enterprise running on a USB>NVME adapter. Copy to disc is about 3-4 minutes. R/W speeds under linux or native win are absurd. 4k R/W around 70-100/200-250MB/s.
Fire it over wintousb though, and it takes 30 minutes to boot on a high end machine. Meanwhile, If I just install Win7 to a USB (not using WintoUSB), first boot is about 10 seconds and the system is screamin'.

Once the Win10ent is booted (wintousb) I couldn't even bother to try getting anything installed to benchmark. Network is stupid fast, anything copying into RAM is fine. Disc IO however is pegged at 100% with a few KB/s. Just as a test, I did a PXE boot that ultimately lands over rs232 just for fun. Was still faster.

Did a quick RW test against the disc from Linux, and it's got no problem moving the data I expect.

What's going on here? I'm about to try a win7 via WintoUSB as well (just writing now).

Ah, P.S. Also tried on a decently fast USBFlash key. Same horrific speed. Even after it's gone through the first boot, subsequent boots are 15-20 minutes. This key gets around 150MBps, with around 50/150 4k rw. Essentially all the way to potato though with WintoUSB

Ah crap. P.P.S. I'm running WintoUSB in a win10 ent VM under linux. I suppose.... it's possible you guys are doing something funky with the disc because of this?

same error whenever i try: Copy Not Genuine
Posted by: henry66 - 09-23-2019, 01:35 AM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (1)

tried several USB sticks and 3 different laptops (all WIN7 64 prof), clone
process runs fine till very end (though very very slow, on USB2.0 port).

but when i try to use the stick for booting (same original laptop or one
of the other ones), i get a black-only screen with an error mssg ''This
Copy of Windows Is Not Genuine''
(or the german version '' Die Echtheit
dieser Windows-Kopie wurde nicht bestätigt
'').

in all cases, the original is certainly MS-certified, in two cases the actual
version sold with the laptop. checked and doublechecked.

would appreciate your or users opinion on this, and any workarounds
possible.

  bcd error
Posted by: shadowskill17 - 08-31-2019, 05:26 PM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (1)

i've been +using wintousb for a year now, and today i can't seem to boot, as there's a bcd error right after the manufacturer's logo. the error says "the boot configuration data file does not contain valid information" this was caused actually by me accidentally deleting my bcd via easybcd. i've tried rebuilding it through command prompt, but i get an error also that cannot find the path specified after using bootrec /rebuildbcd. any help would be appreciated.

Thumbs Up Lost OneDrive files using WinToUSB Clone disks? - A SOLUTION!
Posted by: MJFlash - 08-16-2019, 12:03 AM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (9)

Hi!

I'm set up so that I can run three Windows 10 boot configurations on my Apple 2015 13" MacBook Pro:

  • Booting from the internal Apple SSD's BOOTCAMP volume
  • Booting from a WinToUSB clone of that volume on an external Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD
  • Booting from a WinToUSB clone of that volume on an external Sabrent NVMe M.2 1TB SSD
All works perfectly, except for one very serious issue: each time I boot from one of these systems, files that I've placed in OneDrive on any one of the systems disappear (are mysteriously removed) when I boot from another one! This is true for all files that I've tried, including screenshots (OneDrive/Pictures/Screenshots), as well as downloaded files (OneDrive/Downloads). This occurs whenever I do anything with OneDrive. Note that sometimes the files which are gone will appear in the Recycle Bin, but not often.

I'm trying to understand what's going on. Clearly, the drive IDs are still unique, or else Windows would refuse to permit them to even mount, much less allow copying, etc, which it does.  My Windows 10 account is identical across them.  Somehow, the cloning process has convinced Windows 10/OneDrive that when it sees new files on OneDrive to delete them!  Curiously, if I intentionally delete files on OneDrive on one clone, it will stay deleted on the other volumes.  It's only adding new files that causes this problem to occur.

Please help me to understand how to work around this, for I rely heavily on OneDrive! Is this somehow a result of WinToUSB cloning?

[EDIT UPDATE:] I'm beginning to think that having the convenience of being able to rapidly change boot modes may have just hidden the simple fact that it takes time for OneDrive to synchronize changes to files, and I may just not be giving it enough time to do so. If that's what's happening, WinToUSB cloning isn't the problem. More testing will ensue...

[2ND UPDATE] No, waiting for synchronization, by checking for the files online, shows that the problem is still happening - the files get deleted. The question is whether this is just a pure OneDrive problem, or whether it's a WinToUSB problem...

Thank you very much!

Best Regards,
Mark

  USB flash drive sizes
Posted by: windowsusb42 - 08-10-2019, 05:51 PM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (2)

Hello,

I want to use WinToUSB to install a fresh Windows (Windows 10 Education 64 Bit) on my USB flash drive and to be able to upgrade this Windows installation with Windows To Go Upgrader. What are the required size of the USB flash drive? Are 32 GB sufficient? I would use the "clean up system files" feature of Windows before upgrading, because I know Windows needs a lot of disk space for temporary files.

Thanks in advance.

VHDX and Bitlocker: please help me understand !
Posted by: irob - 08-06-2019, 03:30 AM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (1)

Hello,
I have setup Windows USB.
I have now 2 drives one is called c: and the second one is D: which contains the Win2USB.VHDS file.
I also setup Bitlocker (in case I lose the USB stick) .
My question is this:
is the VHDS file encrypted?
When I go to Bitlocker manager is tells me that C: is encrypted but d: is not.
Can anyone explain it to me?
Thanks

  Storage needed for WinToUSB
Posted by: ItzMe - 07-24-2019, 01:06 PM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (1)

Hi guys,

I'm looking to just install a Windows 10 Home edition on a USB Thumb Drive. I used a 16GB USB Thumb Drive but got the error that it doesn't have enough storage, the usable storage on the drive is 15.1GB though. In this case how much storage do I need on the USB Thumb Drive to just install a Windows 10 Home edition? 32GB?

  WinToUSB drive and Cumulative Updates
Posted by: rjolbrich - 07-17-2019, 11:44 AM - Forum: WinToUSB (Best Windows To Go Creator) - Replies (5)

Hello,
I successfully created a Win 10 1809 WinToUSB drive a few months ago.
I'm having problems installing monthly security cumulative updates through
Windows Update. Is it possible to complete such an update? Other monthly
updates complete successfully in Windows Update.

I've posted on the Microsoft Community without a worthy reply. When faced
with questions on monthly updates, the MVPs almost always recommend a
feature upgrade rather than diagnosing any error code. As you know a
Windows To Go upgrade can't be completed (at least not without your
Upgrader software). I've run through a set of online Microsoft Windows Update
Fix suggestions. None of them succeeded. I always receive a 80070157 error code
from Windows Update. Is anyone an expert error code interpreter?

I also read Microsoft blocked updates for people with USB drives starting in May.
I still receive the same error code now in July. Before I consider purchasing
your Upgrader software, I would like to know definitively whether monthly
security cumulative updates are possible to complete!
Thanks
