As admin already said: "We have removed this restriction in the new version.". So there's no more time limit in the new versions.

The backup/restore feature of HBS, which is the main feature of this software, works perfectly fine for USB drives.
Cloning whole drives or partitions *to* USB might be useful if your goal is to make Windows run from USB directly.
But you said it yourself: This was not your use case here anyway.

If you want to clone an old HDD to a new SSD and you don't want to go through the steps of backing up and restoring from it, why don't you just do it the other way around then:
  1. Install HBO, create a fresh rescue medium and install it on a USB thumb drive.
  2. Remove your old HDD drive, insert your fresh SSD.
  3. Attach your old HDD drive to your USB caddy (or any other SATA USB reader).
  4. Boot from your new rescue medium and clone your old SATA drive to your new internal SSD drive.
  5. Done.

Good idea. Forgot about that trick since I only do imaging and I'm old too Smile. Some people refer to it as a "reverse clone".

I have mentioned above that I had already found the workaround by creating an image ... I was doing that for a laptop over a year ago ... but used my Win7 desktop to do that at the time since having several SATA connections on the motherboard meant not being limited by USB2 or 3 speeds .. I also used Win2USB to create a bootable USB Win 10 drive and replaced the onboard installation with Tiny10.
DiskGenius will now be my GoTo disk clone media ... I did think of Gparted since one can clone partitions from Drive to Drive but that also opens a new box of worms getting the partition info / labelling correct ... not to mention bootable .. but that is another option for another time ...

I was really happy with Hasleo until I found that free doesn't mean free ... I only need to clone or backup occasionally, most of my time being on other forums or researching why things don't work ... and I was only too happy to promote Hasleo when it was appropriate for the thread ... This latest revelation changed all that ... most apps that ran from XP through to 7 would run on next generation versions of Windows ... and to date my most used apps go back that far .. which is why they are still being used by me ...

HBS v5.4 runs just fine on Windows 7 or newer, so updating to a newer version (with removed timebomb) would've solved your problems as far as I can see. That makes cloning your OS to USB the only thing left that's not going to work with the free version. Since this edge case is basically the sole reason WinToUSB exists I can see why this was not included in the free version of HBS (so far).

But that's ok. Everyone can use the tools that best fit their use cases. For me personally the backup and restore capabilities of HBS outperform every other (free) software right now in terms of performance and usability. Cool

Yes, not everybody works the same way and I agree that HBS provides a great selection of features that I want for a free program.
He was given a very reasonable way to correct both of his issues with the older version and why he wouldn't update is beyond me but then again he is still in W7 too (yes, I know some people love it but don't count me as one of them). He also was given 2 solutions to transfer his OS to a new disk, do it by imaging or by putting the source, instead of the destination, disk in a USB enclosure so HBS can do all he needs to do.

DiskGenius can generate revenue from its paid version, while Hasleo Backup Suite is currently completely free, so we can only rely on the revenue from other products to support the ongoing development of Hasleo Backup Suite. Yes, everyone has the right to choose the tool that best fit their usage cases.
