Delete Backup Images in Hasleo Backup Suite - Tutorial

For data security, we usually perform backups of our data on a regular basis, and as the backup version increases, the backup image will occupy more and more storage space, which will lead to an increase in storage costs and I/O workload. As a professional Windows backup software, Hasleo Backup Suite provides the feature of deleting backup images, which allows us to free up storage space by deleting backup image versions that we no longer need to keep, this feature is available for System Backup, Disk/Partition Backup and File Backup.

Hasleo Backup Suite supports differential, incremental and full backup modes, and the backup images of incremental backup and differential backup depend on the previous backup image version, if you accidentally delete the previous image version, the entire backup chain may be damaged, so you should always use the delete image feature provided by Hasleo Backup Suite to delete the backup image instead of manually deleting the backup image from the task folder.

Below we will show you how to delete backup images to free up storage space, and you can also use the image merge feature to merge multiple backup image versions into one version to free up storage space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I manually delete backup files from Windows Explorer?

A: No. For incremental/differential backups, the backup chain depends on all versions. Manual deletion breaks the chain and makes restores impossible. Always use Hasleo's delete feature.

Q: What happens if I delete the first backup in the chain?

A: All backups depending on that full backup become unusable. The software prevents you from deleting the first backup—you should delete newer versions instead.

Q: What's the difference between delete and merge?

A: Delete removes selected versions completely. Merge combines incremental backups into one, saving space while keeping restore capability. Use merge to free space without breaking chains.

Q: Can I undo a deletion?

A: No. Once deleted, backups are permanently removed. There's no undo. Verify carefully before confirming deletion.

Q: Should I use image retention policy instead?

A: Yes. Set retention policies to automatically manage backup versions. This saves manual work and ensures you always have enough restore points.

Q: Can I delete encrypted backup images?

A: Yes. Password is only needed for restore, not deletion. You can delete encrypted backups without entering password.

Q: Does deleting free up space immediately?

A: Yes. The space is freed immediately. However, you may need to manually delete empty folders afterward.

Q: How many backup versions should I keep?

A: Keep enough for your needs. Minimum: 2-3 recent versions. For critical systems, keep more. Balance storage cost with restore needs.
